Shifting Loyalties

Some students, like University of Michigan rising senior Addison Stone, feel that the Democratic Party’s embrace of socialist candidates is alienating Jewish voters. Stone noted that the party’s stance on Israel is becoming increasingly consequential, particularly as the progressive wing gains ground.

Dylan Goldman, a rising senior at UC Berkeley, identified himself as ‘left leaning’ but criticized Democratic lawmakers for welcoming socialist candidates who hold hostile views toward Israel. Goldman argued that this approach is pushing Jewish Democrats to the right, making them feel ‘so alienated by our own party’ that they are considering conservative alternatives.

Campus Climate

The conference brought together hundreds of pro-Israel students for advocacy training, networking, and discussions on supporting Israel, combating antisemitism, and strengthening the U.S.-Israel relationship on college campuses. Israel on Campus Coalition CEO Jacob Baime emphasized that the hostility toward Jewish students on American campuses should alarm every American, citing incidents of mobs on the quad, intimidation in the classroom, and harassment online.

Despite these challenges, Baime expressed optimism about the current generation of pro-Israel students, describing them as ‘the proudest, toughest, most organized’ cohort he has seen. The students are determined to fight for what they believe in, and their efforts may have significant implications for the Democratic Party and its relationship with Jewish voters.
