Gelato Makers Buy Industrial Building

A Westport-based gelato company, Gelato Haven LLC, plans to move its manufacturing business from Sargent Drive to Grand Avenue in New Haven, after purchasing a former commercial-bakery building from Lyman Orchards for $1.05 million.

Relocation Plans

The company, controlled by Eric and Kelly Emmert, expects to move into the new location by the end of the year and plans to focus on wholesaling gelato and sorbet. The new location will also bring in more jobs, with 25 to 30 people expected to be working out of the Grand Avenue hub within two years, up from the current 11 employees.

The building, located at 724 Grand Ave, was previously owned by the local bakery company Something Sweet and was last appraised by the city for tax purposes as worth $1,116,328. The property sale was recorded on the city’s land records database on Friday.

According to Frank D’Ostilio from the real estate company Houlihan Lawrence, Lyman Orchards decided to sell the property because it was surplus capacity and they didn’t need it any longer. The company has, however, held onto its Long Wharf space, where it is continuing to make some of its pies.
