GECU to Merge with Bank of the Southwest, Creating $4.9 B Credit Union in El Paso

El Paso, Texas – In a move that will expand financial services for families and small businesses across the region, GECU announced Thursday that it has secured approval from federal and state regulators to acquire Bank of the Southwest. The two entities will officially combine on November 1, operating under the GECU brand while maintaining separate divisions during the integration period.

What the merger means for members

GECU says the acquisition will not affect members’ accounts, service options, or day‑to‑day operations. Existing Bank of the Southwest customers will become GECU members, gaining access to the credit union’s broader suite of products, including lower‑cost loans, higher‑yield savings accounts, and community‑focused financial education programs.

Growth and scale

After the merger, the new entity will manage roughly $4.9 billion in assets, positioning it as one of the largest credit unions in the Southwest. The deal also adds 11 new branches in New Mexico to GECU’s footprint, extending its reach into neighboring communities and providing more convenient banking options for families who value local, member‑owned institutions.

Leadership continuity

GECU President and CEO Alex Rascón will retain his leadership roles for the combined organization, ensuring continuity of vision and a steady hand as the credit union navigates the integration. Rascón emphasized the importance of preserving the member‑first philosophy that both institutions share.

Regulatory approval

The acquisition received clearance from the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department’s Financial Institutions Division (NMRLD). These approvals confirm that the merger meets all safety and soundness standards and will not compromise the stability of either institution.

Community impact

Local leaders praised the transaction as a boost to the regional economy. By consolidating resources, GECU aims to offer more competitive rates on mortgages and small‑business loans, supporting homeownership and entrepreneurship—key pillars of a thriving community. The expanded network also promises more job opportunities within the credit union’s expanded operations.

Next steps

Both organizations will work closely over the coming weeks to align systems, train staff, and communicate any procedural changes to members. While the integration will be phased, customers can expect a seamless transition with no interruption to banking services.

For more information, members are encouraged to visit their local GECU branches or the official website, where FAQs and contact details will be posted as the November launch approaches.
