El Paso, Texas – The Texas Tech Health El Paso campus received a $500,000 donation from the GECU Foundation to support the Building Hope Campaign. The funds are earmarked for the Fox Cancer Center, a new facility that will provide the first comprehensive cancer‑care services in the Borderplex region.
Why the Fox Cancer Center matters
The center, currently under construction, is a partnership between University Medical Center (UMC) El Paso and Texas Tech Health (TTH) El Paso. By combining academic medicine with community‑based care, the Fox Cancer Center will offer advanced diagnostics, surgery, radiation therapy and supportive services all in one location. Residents who once traveled out of state for specialized treatment will now have access to world‑class care close to home.
GECU Foundation’s commitment
“Our commitment to Texas Tech Health El Paso’s Fox Cancer Center is an investment in the health of those who live in our region,” said Emmeline Garcia, Executive Director of the GECU Foundation. “We’re honored to support this remarkable center that will bring world‑class cancer care and innovation to countless people right here in the heart of El Paso.”
Hospital leadership’s response
Dr. Richard Lange, president of Texas Tech Health El Paso, praised the generosity of the foundation. “The GECU Foundation has long demonstrated its commitment to investing in the health and well‑being of our community,” he said. “Their generosity reflects our shared dedication to ensuring families throughout the Borderplex have access to exceptional cancer care close to home. This investment will help us build a healthier future for our region, and its impact will be felt for generations to come.”
Impact on families
For many Borderplex families, the Fox Cancer Center represents more than a new building; it offers hope that treatment can be coordinated with work, school and family responsibilities without the burden of long‑distance travel. The center’s design includes patient‑family lounges, counseling services and outreach programs aimed at early detection and education.
Looking ahead
Construction of the Fox Cancer Center is progressing on schedule, with completion expected in the next two years. Once open, the facility will join a growing network of health resources in El Paso, reinforcing the city’s role as a regional hub for medical excellence. Community leaders, donors and health professionals alike are optimistic that the center will attract additional research funding and create new jobs in the area.
