El Paso – The University of Texas at El Paso announced Monday that GECU has pledged a $29.1 million commitment to support enhancements at the Don Haskins Center and the broader UTEP athletics program. University officials say it is the largest donation ever made to UTEP Athletics and the second‑largest gift in the institution’s history.
New name for the iconic venue
During a ceremony on campus, UTEP President Heather Wilson unveiled the new name for the arena: GECU Arena at the Don Haskins Center. Wilson praised the partnership, noting that “almost every family in El Paso has a special memory at the GECU Arena at the Don Haskins Center,” and expressed gratitude for GECU’s support of student‑athletes and the community.
GECU’s perspective
Alex Rascón, president and CEO of GECU, said the collaboration “honors the past while investing in the future.” He highlighted the arena’s five‑decade legacy as a gathering place for concerts, graduations and sports rivalries, and affirmed GECU’s pride in standing alongside UTEP to preserve Coach Haskins’ legacy for generations.
How the gift will be used
UTEP officials explained that the funds will be directed toward a variety of projects, including upgrades to the arena itself, improvements to other athletics facilities, and general support for the athletics department. Jim Senter, vice president of athletics, said the donation will help maintain the arena as a venue where “legends unfold” and will enhance the fan experience.
Senter also noted that the partnership will bolster UTEP’s competitiveness in the Mountain West Conference by aiding recruitment and retention of student‑athletes. Additionally, a portion of the gift will fund financial‑literacy education programs for UTEP students.
Long‑term naming agreement
The naming rights for GECU Arena at the Don Haskins Center will remain in place for the next 15 years, providing sustained visibility for both the credit union and the university.
Community impact
Local residents and alumni expressed enthusiasm for the investment, seeing it as a boost to El Paso’s cultural and sporting life. The arena hosts not only university events but also concerts, community gatherings and regional tournaments, making the upgrade a benefit for the broader city.
With this historic gift, UTEP and GECU demonstrate a shared commitment to strengthening El Paso’s educational and recreational resources, ensuring that the arena continues to serve as a cornerstone of community pride for years to come.
