Gary Cole, a familiar face from both film and television, has returned to his theatrical roots in Chicago. Known for his roles in ‘Office Space,’ ‘Veep,’ and ‘NCIS,’ Cole is now starring in ‘Catch as Catch Can’ at the Steppenwolf Theatre, marking his first stage appearance in 25 years. The play, part of Steppenwolf’s 50th anniversary season, runs through July 12.
Chicago Beginnings
Cole, originally from Park Ridge, Illinois, began his acting career in Chicago. He was a member of the Steppenwolf ensemble and co-founded the Remains Theatre in 1979. His early days in Chicago were filled with experimental theater, a vibrant scene that he fondly recalls as integral to his success. ‘It was a good place for a young actor to start,’ Cole said, reflecting on the supportive community and the city’s commitment to the arts.
During his time at Illinois State University, Cole crossed paths with future Steppenwolf founders like John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. He left college early to pursue acting full-time in Chicago, a decision he attributes to the ‘gift of desperation’ that drove him forward without a backup plan.
A Changing City
Returning to Chicago, Cole notes the city’s transformation over the years. ‘There’s been a lot of expansion and a lot of new building,’ he observed, reminiscing about the city’s past while marveling at its growth. Despite these changes, some things remain constant for Cole, such as his love for Lou Malnati’s pizza, a staple he has already enjoyed multiple times during his visit.
Tickets for ‘Catch as Catch Can’ are available on the Steppenwolf Theatre website, offering audiences a chance to see Cole’s return to the stage in a city that played a significant role in his career.
