Garland child dies after being left in hot car, police say

Garland Police responded to a call on Redbird Drive at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, finding family members performing lifesaving measures on a five‑year‑old girl inside a parked car. The child was transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.

What investigators have learned

According to the police report, an adult family member had returned home from school with the girl and a sibling, leaving the child inside the vehicle. The sibling’s age was not disclosed. When the parent realized the girl was missing, they returned to the car, found her unresponsive, began CPR, and called 911.

Investigators have not yet filed any charges, and the case remains open as authorities continue to determine the exact timeline and circumstances that led to the tragedy.

Heat conditions contributed

The Texas Department of State Health Services notes that a core body temperature of 104 °F can trigger heatstroke, and temperatures of 107 °F are typically lethal. On the day of the incident, the National Weather Service recorded a temperature of 100 °F at 7:53 p.m. near Dallas‑Fort Worth International Airport, while the airport’s official high for the day reached 104 °F.

National Safety Council data indicate that when the outside temperature is 95 °F, a car’s interior can climb to 129 °F within 30 minutes. After just ten minutes, interior temperatures may already be 114 °F, far exceeding safe limits for a child whose body heats up three to five times faster than an adult’s.

Community response

Garland Police have offered community counseling services to the family, a standard practice in such cases. The department also reminded residents of the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, especially during the summer heat, and encouraged the use of safety reminders such as placing a reminder item in the back seat.

Public safety reminder

Experts continue to stress that even a short period of exposure to extreme heat can be fatal for young children. Parents and caregivers are urged to double‑check that no one is left in a vehicle before locking the doors and to seek immediate medical attention if a child shows signs of heatstroke, such as flushed skin, rapid breathing, or loss of consciousness.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have asked anyone with additional information to contact Garland Police.
