Garfield County jury recommends life without parole for Charles Jordan in Enid murder

Enid, OK – A Garfield County jury on Monday voted to recommend life in prison without the possibility of parole for Charles Jordan, 57, after his conviction for the first‑degree murder of 27‑year‑old Colby Sheppard. Sheppard’s remains were discovered on August 27, 2024, in a storm cellar behind an abandoned house near 12th Street and Ash Avenue.

Investigation and discovery

Sheppard was reported missing in December 2023. Police received a tip that led detectives to the storm cellar where the remains were located, according to Cass Rains, public information officer for the Enid Police Department.

Legal proceedings

District Attorney Tommy Humphries praised the jurors for their careful attention, stating, “Colby Sheppard’s family waited a long time for this day. The jurors gave this case their full attention, and their verdict reflects the seriousness of what happened. Our thoughts remain with Colby’s family and friends.” The jury’s recommendation will be considered by the judge at Jordan’s formal sentencing, scheduled for October 21.

Other suspects

The investigation has identified three additional individuals allegedly involved in the crime: Devin Harris, Heaven Jordan, and Victor Batello. Harris and Heaven Jordan previously pleaded guilty to first‑degree manslaughter for their roles. The trial for the fourth suspect, Victor Batello, is set for October 26.

Possible motive

Police initially explored whether Sheppard’s murder was retaliation for the 2022 disappearance of Kendra Batello, a woman last seen in July 2022. The nonprofit Oklahoma Cold Cases confirmed that Kendra remains missing and said detectives have been unable to substantiate any link between her disappearance and Sheppard’s death.

Community response

The case has drawn significant attention from Enid residents, who have expressed relief that the legal process is moving forward. Local faith leaders have offered prayers for the Sheppard family and called for continued vigilance in protecting the safety of the community.

As the sentencing date approaches, the Garfield County court will determine the final penalty for Jordan, while the upcoming trial of Victor Batello will further clarify the full scope of the criminal enterprise.
