Gael Monfils celebrates 40th birthday with comeback win at U.S. Open

New York – On Tuesday, French tennis showman Gael Monfils marked his 40th birthday with a dominant performance at the U.S. Open, advancing to the second round after a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Peruvian wildcard Adolfo Daniel Vallejo.

Monfils, a former world No. 6 and 2016 New York semi‑finalist, stumbled out of the gate, dropping the opening set 2-6. The crowd, aware of his milestone birthday, gave a warm ovation as the veteran rallied. He answered with a blistering second set, taking it 6-1 and leveling the match.

From there, Monfils seized control. He dominated the third set 6-2, showcasing his trademark athleticism and powerful cross‑court forehand. Fans rose to their feet as he fired a decisive forehand winner to close the set.

The fourth set turned into a showcase of experience versus youthful energy. Vallejo, who entered the tournament on a wildcard, surrendered several breaks, allowing Monfils to cruise to a 6-0 bagel. The Frenchman capped the match with a big ace, prompting a standing ovation from the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd.

Why the win matters

Monfils’ victory is more than a birthday celebration; it underscores his determination to finish his Grand Slam career on a high note. A day earlier, fellow veteran Stan Wawrinka played his final Grand Slam match, prompting speculation that Monfils might follow suit. Instead, he proved he still possesses the skill and stamina to compete at the highest level.

“I feel blessed to celebrate my birthday on court with the support of these amazing fans,” Monfils said in the post‑match interview. “It’s a reminder that age is just a number when you love the game and have a great crowd behind you.”

Next round preview

Monfils now looks ahead to a second‑round clash with American qualifier Tien Liu, who earned his spot by advancing through the qualifying draw. Liu, a promising young talent, will provide a fresh challenge for the seasoned Frenchman.

Both players will meet on Tuesday night under the lights of Louis Armstrong Stadium. Monfils will aim to continue his winning streak, while Liu hopes to pull off an upset and extend his own U.S. Open run.

U.S. Open context

The U.S. Open, one of tennis’s four Grand Slam tournaments, draws global attention each year. This year’s event has already featured notable storylines, including the record‑breaking opening‑day audience reported by ESPN. Monfils’ birthday win adds a feel‑good narrative to the tournament’s early rounds, highlighting the enduring appeal of veteran players who continue to inspire fans.

As the tournament progresses, eyes will remain on the emerging American talent and the seasoned international stars who still have the fire to compete at the sport’s highest level.
