G7 Leaders Back Trump’s Iran Deal

G7 leaders have thrown their support behind President Donald Trump’s tentative agreement with Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz and extend a shaky ceasefire. The agreement, which is set to be formally signed on Friday, aims to prevent Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapon and tackle the threats related to its regional and ballistic activities.

Details of the Agreement

The leaders called the deal a ‘historic opportunity’ and said they were ‘ready to contribute to its implementation.’ However, the White House and Iranian officials have sometimes offered contradictory interpretations of what is in the agreement. Trump said that the deal would ensure Iran never has a nuclear weapon, and that it was ‘about 99.9% of what I wanted.’

The G7 leaders also discussed concerns about China flooding export markets with subsidized products and the need to foster economic growth. They stressed their support for Ukraine as it battles Russia’s invasion and agreed to increase deliveries of air defense systems.

Reactions and Concerns

Despite the G7 leaders’ backing, Trump still faces skepticism about the deal from some members of his own party and from key ally Israel. Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed nearly 4,000 people, including hundreds of civilians, and displaced more than 1 million since fighting began on March 2. Trump said that he did not think an attack on Hezbollah by Israel would necessarily sink the agreement, but expressed concern about the number of people being killed.
