Futurama cast visits Huntington Library to smell rare corpse flowers

San Marino, Calif. – In a unique promotional outing, the cast and crew of Hulu’s revived series Futurama visited the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens to witness the rare simultaneous bloom of two corpse flowers, Odorysseus and Odora. The visit gave the team a first‑hand encounter with the infamous rotting‑flesh scent that inspired the upcoming episode “Late Bloomers.”

Cast members get a whiff of the infamous bloom

Voice actors Phil LaMarr (who voices Fry) and Maurice LaMarche (who voices Kif) were joined by executive producer David X. Cohen, executive producer Claudia Katz, writer Eric Horsted, and directors Edmund Fong and Peter Avanzino. The group toured the garden’s tropical greenhouse, where the two corpse flowers were in the final 24‑48 hours of their bloom before the plants close for years.

LaMarche described the odor as “like a week‑old steak in the back of the fridge, plus a green note,” while Cohen said he wanted “the full, powerful dirt smell” and placed his nose “pretty deep” into the flower’s scent chamber.

Episode ties in the botanical oddity

“Late Bloomers,” set to debut as part of Futurama Season 14 on Hulu, centers on a corpse flower’s shocking discovery. Cohen hinted that the episode takes a “bit risqué” turn, urging fans to watch for the surprise that follows the bloom.

New episodes of Futurama premiere on Mondays on Hulu, with all past seasons available on Hulu and Disney+.

About the Huntington Library

The Huntington, a historic cultural institution in San Marino, is known for its extensive botanical collections, art galleries, and research library. The rare simultaneous blooming of two corpse flowers is an uncommon event, drawing interest from botanists and the public alike.
