More than 30 gallons of fuel were spilled on the National Mall from generators used during a recent event celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. The event was organized by Freedom 250, a group established by the Trump administration. The fuel seeped into underground cisterns designed to collect rainwater for irrigation purposes on the Mall.
Vandalism Allegations
Freedom 250 representatives have attributed the spill to acts of vandalism. Rachel Reisner, a spokeswoman for the group, stated that their equipment has been repeatedly targeted, and the recent fuel leak was a direct result of such tampering. Upon discovering the damage, Freedom 250 and their vendors quickly mobilized to coordinate a cleanup response in partnership with the National Park Service.
The event, titled “Rededicate 250,” took place on May 17 and attracted thousands of attendees for a day of prayer, music, and speeches from religious and political leaders, including top Trump administration officials such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Environmental Concerns
Efforts to clean up the spill are currently underway, with a Mobile Command Center from Lewis Environmental, an environmental remediation company, observed on-site. The National Park Service typically holds the permit holder liable for environmental mitigation after a spill of this magnitude, though it remains unclear if Freedom 250 and Event Strategies Inc., the event organizers, will be responsible for the cleanup costs.
The spill has raised concerns about the future of the grass on the National Mall, which is already under pressure from high-foot-traffic events planned for the coming weeks, including a Great American State Fair and a Fourth of July Salute to America.
National Park Service and Lewis Environmental have not responded to requests for comment, and the Metropolitan Police Department referred inquiries to the National Park Service.
