Fries are the world’s favorite potato dish, but ketchup is not the most popular topping. According to a new consumer survey, more than 12,000 adults across 11 countries ranked fries as their favorite potato dish.
Global Fry Traditions
From disco fries in America to poutine in Canada, each country has its own unique fry tradition. In Argentina, chimichurri fries are a popular choice, while in Spain, patatas bravas are a staple.
In the Netherlands, patatje oorlog, or war fries, are a favorite, topped with mayonnaise, raw diced onions, and Indonesian-influenced peanut satay sauce. In South Korea, kimchi fries are a popular choice, with fermented kimchi layered over hot fries.
Trying Global Fries at Home
Mark Slutzky, director of culinary at McCain Foods North America, suggests trying global fry creations at home. He recommends using a waffle or curly fry for chimichurri fries and a thicker, straight-cut fry for patatje oorlog.
With the increasing availability of global ingredients, it’s easier than ever to recreate these dishes at home. Whether you’re in the mood for something classic or adventurous, there’s a fry tradition out there for you.
