Fresno Unified has implemented a new bus stop system for magnet students, replacing the old model with a hub system that places current stops at neighborhood schools. The change, which is part of the district’s partnership with Zūm, a student transportation company, has raised concerns among parents who say the new stops are farther away from their homes.

Parental Concerns

Some parents, like Annie Masutsubo, are worried about the safety of their children, who will now have to walk longer distances to reach their new bus stops. Masutsubo’s son, Benji, will have to walk a half-mile away unsupervised and cross a busy intersection to get to his new stop.

Another parent, Christy Lappe, shared similar concerns, saying that her student will have to walk a mile away from their previous stop. Lappe also questioned the district’s decision, saying that it may lead to a decline in enrollment and an increase in tardiness.

Parents are being directed to register for the Zūm app to get information about their magnet students’ new bus stops. However, some parents say that the communication from the district has been unclear and that they were not given enough time to adjust to the changes.
