The Fresno City Council has unanimously approved a resolution to support the Better Roads Safe Streets initiative, a tax initiative aimed at funding transportation needs and infrastructure in Fresno County.
Transportation Needs
According to Mayor Jerry Dyer, almost two-thirds of the revenue generated by the tax initiative will be dedicated to fixing local roads, including alleyways, sidewalks, and median islands. The city of Fresno is expected to receive at least $7.3 million annually for transportation infrastructure.
Councilmembers Miguel Arias, Tyler Maxwell, and Nick Richardson also spoke in favor of the tax initiative, citing the need for a real solution to the city’s transportation problems. Maxwell emphasized the importance of complete streets for all neighborhoods and the need to address issues such as potholes, sidewalk repairs, and tree maintenance.
The tax initiative would renew an existing transportation sales tax, rather than adding new taxes. The goal is to get the measure on the ballot for the November election, with the Fresno County Clerk/Registrar of Voters aiming to complete the signature verification process by August 18.
