The Fresno County Board of Supervisors is set to make a decision on the Better Roads, Safe Streets measure, which aims to replace the existing Measure C transportation sales tax. The measure has gathered over 22,000 signatures, enough to qualify for the November ballot.
Local Leaders Weigh In
Several local leaders, including Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer and Clovis Mayor Vong Mouanoutoua, have expressed their support for the measure, urging the supervisors to respect the will of the voters. The measure is expected to create over 68,000 jobs and generate $13.5 billion in economic output if approved.
However, some supervisors, including Board Chair Garry Bredefeld, have suggested that a study on the measure’s impact may be necessary, which could delay the vote. Supervisor Nathan Magsig has also expressed concerns about the measure, seeking clarification on county-specific provisions.
Competing Measure
A rival group, Fix Our Roads, had announced plans to gather signatures for their own Measure C successor plan but has not provided any updates on their progress. Clovis Mayor Pro Tem Diane Pearce, who is running for Magsig’s seat, has called for a delay in the vote, suggesting that the supervisors should force more study and allow Measure C to expire without a replacement.
