French Regulator Warns Crypto Firms to Obtain EU Licences by June Deadline

In a move that underscores the European Union’s commitment to tightening regulations on the cryptocurrency industry, France’s top markets regulator has issued a stern warning to crypto companies operating within the EU. They must obtain the necessary licences by the end of June or face the possibility of being blacklisted and prosecuted.

EU’s MiCA Regulations

The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulations require all crypto companies to secure a licence by June 30 if they wish to continue their operations within the bloc. This regulatory framework is part of the EU’s broader effort to bring more oversight and stability to the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency sector.

Marie-Anne Barbat-Layani, president of the French markets regulator, Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF), emphasized the urgency of the situation during a recent press event. She stated, “It’s becoming very, very urgent to finalise the licences applications.” This call to action is directed at ensuring that companies comply with the new regulations in a timely manner.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

Companies that fail to secure the required licences by the deadline will be placed on blacklists and could face enforcement actions, including prosecution, if they continue to actively seek EU customers without proper authorisation. This move is intended to protect consumers and maintain the integrity of the financial markets within the EU.

The AMF’s warning serves as a reminder to crypto firms of the importance of adhering to regulatory requirements and the potential consequences of non-compliance. As the deadline approaches, companies are urged to ensure that their licence applications are completed and submitted promptly to avoid any legal repercussions.
