Freedom 250 cleanup keeps major D.C. streets closed through early September

Washington, D.C. – While the Freedom 250 Grand Prix has finished, drivers should expect continued disruptions as crews dismantle the temporary racecourse. The District’s public‑works teams are removing large concrete barriers, grandstands, portable restrooms and metal pedestrian bridges, meaning several major streets will remain closed to regular traffic through Sept. 3.

Road closures and limited access

According to a statement from the D.C. Police Department, the following streets are completely closed to public vehicle traffic until the end of the cleanup period:

  • Specific street names were listed in the police release (details omitted for brevity).

Only authorized museum employees and local delivery trucks may enter these zones at designated checkpoints, subject to verification by police and cleanup crews.

Partial lane reductions and parking restrictions

In addition to full closures, several segments of the former race route are operating under active lane reductions or emergency no‑parking zones. Drivers are urged to obey signage and avoid stopping in restricted areas, as cleanup equipment and heavy machinery will be moving continuously.

Alternative routes for motorists

To bypass the gridlock around the National Mall, the police department recommends using the following open corridors:

  • Major avenues and arterial roads that remain unobstructed (specific routes provided in the official notice).

Motorists should plan extra travel time and stay alert for changing traffic patterns as crews work to dismantle the course.

What the cleanup entails

Cleanup crews have been seen on Monday dismantling massive sections of fencing, stacking them for later removal. Large concrete barriers, which require specialized machinery, are being lifted and relocated. The temporary grandstands that lined the course, portable toilets, and sizable metal pedestrian bridges are also slated for removal before the streets can be fully reopened.

The effort reflects the city’s commitment to restoring normal traffic flow while ensuring safety for both workers and the public. Residents are encouraged to follow official updates from the D.C. Police Department and the District’s Department of Transportation for any changes to the schedule.
