Shreveport, La. – Families, students and anyone curious about the heavens have a new opportunity to gaze at the stars this weekend. The Shreveport‑Bossier Astronomical Society is hosting its final public star‑party of the fall on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Shreveport Observatory.
Decades of Community Astronomy
Dr. Cran Lucas, a longtime member of the society, highlighted the organization’s mission to bring astronomy to the public. Founded in 1959, the society is among the nation’s oldest continuously meeting astronomy clubs. Over the years it has hosted four free public star‑parties each year—two in the spring and two in the fall—providing hands‑on learning experiences for thousands of Ark‑La‑Tex residents.
Strong Turnout Despite Weather Setbacks
Although rain forced the cancellation of this year’s spring events, the first fall star‑party, held about two and a half weeks ago, attracted more than 600 attendees. Lucas said the enthusiastic response demonstrates the community’s appetite for science education and family‑friendly outings.

Supporting Families and Faith‑Based Learning
The event aligns with the community’s commitment to family‑centered education and the Christian principle of stewardship over God’s creation. By fostering curiosity about the universe, the star‑party encourages families to explore the wonders of God’s handiwork together.
