Des Moines – The Iowa State Fair is expanding its transportation options for families and visitors who need assistance getting around the fairgrounds. In addition to the traditional parking lots, the fair now offers a free shuttle service from Southridge Mall and rental scooters, as well as six‑seat golf carts for areas that are harder to reach.
Shuttle service eases parking pressure
Fair CEO Jeremy Parsons explained that the new shuttle runs every 15 minutes from Southridge Mall to the fairgrounds. “We know more people want to come to the fair than we really have adequate parking to provide,” Parsons said. “Many people park in our lots and in nearby neighborhoods, but there is even greater demand than that.”
On Saturday, more than 9,000 fairgoers used the free shuttle, creating long lines for return trips. Fair officials said additional staff will be on hand throughout the weekend to direct riders and reduce delays. Passengers interviewed aboard the shuttle said it has become their preferred way to travel to and from the fair.
Rental scooters and golf carts for on‑site mobility
Visitors with mobility challenges can also rent scooters on the fairgrounds. “They are convenient. They are easy to get around in,” said scooter user Ed Lawrence. “You can pretty much go anywhere in the fair with them.” The fair’s six‑seat golf carts are deployed in sections of the grounds that are more difficult to navigate, and riders can request a cart at an information booth.
Parsons emphasized that the information booth is the central hub for transportation requests. “Fairgoers can stop at an information booth and request a ride to kind of take them to their next stop,” he said.
Supporting families and community members
The expanded mobility options reflect the fair’s commitment to making the event accessible for all families, including seniors, parents with young children, and anyone with limited mobility. By reducing the need to search for distant parking and offering convenient on‑site transport, the fair aims to keep visitors focused on the attractions, food, and community spirit that define the annual gathering.
Fair officials will continue to monitor demand and adjust staffing as needed throughout the week. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, use the shuttle from Southridge Mall, and take advantage of the scooter and golf‑cart services to enjoy a smoother, more enjoyable fair experience.
