Veterans, active‑duty service members, National Guard and Reserve personnel, and their spouses in Central Oregon have a new opportunity to launch or grow a small business. Applications for the Startup Training Resources to Inspire Veteran Entrepreneurship (STRIVE) program are open now and will close on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

STRIVE is an eight‑week, in‑person training series designed to teach military‑connected entrepreneurs the skills needed to start and sustain a small business. The curriculum is delivered in partnership with Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families and is hosted at Central Oregon Community College’s Bend Campus and the Central Oregon Veteran’s Ranch.
Phase 1 begins with online pre‑class assignments. Phase 2 consists of interactive classroom sessions held every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon, running from Oct. 6 through Nov. 24. Participants receive a light breakfast and refreshments each week. The opening session, a pitch competition on Nov. 17, and the final class on Nov. 24 take place on the COCC Bend Campus; the remaining five sessions meet at the Veteran’s Ranch, located between Bend and Redmond.
Eligibility and ownership requirement
To qualify, at least 50 % of the business must be owned by a veteran, active‑duty service member, Reserve or Guard member, or a military spouse. Eligible applicants include honorably discharged veterans, service members within one year of discharge, spouses, and current or former Guard or Reserve members.
Mentorship and awards
After completing the coursework, graduates gain ongoing support from COCC’s Small Business Development Center and Syracuse University. In Phase 3, participants are paired with experienced mentors who can provide industry insight and resources. A “Pitch Your Idea” contest offers a $6,500 cash prize pool for the most promising business concepts.
How to apply
Interested candidates must submit their applications by Wednesday, Sept. 30. Selected applicants will be notified of acceptance on Thursday, Oct. 1.
