Francois Hollande is a former president of France, serving from 2012 to 2017. He was born on August 12, 1954, in Rouen, Normandy, France. Hollande’s father, Georges Hollande, was a physician, and his mother, Nicole Tribert, was a social worker.
Early Life and Education
Hollande attended the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris and the École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Paris. He also attended the École nationale d’administration. In 1977, he served in the French Army.
Hollande joined the Socialist Party in 1979 and quickly rose through the ranks. He served as an aide to Socialist President Francois Mitterrand in 1981 and later became a member of the Ussel City Council.
Presidency
Hollande was elected president of France in 2012, defeating Nicolas Sarkozy in the runoff election. During his presidency, he implemented several policies, including a same-sex marriage law and a law allowing same-sex couples to adopt children.
After the 2015 Charlie Hebdo Paris terrorist attacks, Hollande called for convicted terrorists to be stripped of their French nationality if they held dual citizenship. He also taught economics at the elite Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris.
Post-Presidency
After leaving office in 2017, Hollande has remained active in politics. In 2018, he published a book about his time in office, and in 2024, he announced he was running for Parliament in the snap elections.
