France’s CEA partners with Alice & Bob to advance quantum‑supercomputing software

In a move aimed at strengthening France’s high‑tech sector, the state‑run Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) announced a partnership with quantum‑computing startup Alice & Bob. The collaboration will focus on enhancing Qaptiva, the software platform created by the state‑owned supercomputer maker Bull, to better integrate quantum processors with conventional supercomputers.

Why the partnership matters

CEA, which manages an annual budget of nearly €6 billion and oversees France’s nuclear deterrent, said the programme is designed to give French startups early access to its powerful computing facilities. By becoming an early customer, the agency hopes to nurture a domestic quantum industry that can compete globally.

The goal is straightforward: assign the quantum machine only those parts of a problem where it can eventually provide a speed advantage, while the bulk of the workload remains on classical supercomputers. This hybrid approach seeks to avoid the software bottleneck that Nvidia’s CUDA‑Q has created in artificial‑intelligence applications, according to executives from both organisations.

Building on existing French quantum assets

CEA already operates quantum computers from French firms Quandela and Pasqal alongside its classical supercomputing infrastructure. The partnership will add Alice & Bob’s quantum hardware to the mix in 2027, further expanding the nation’s quantum‑computing ecosystem.

By fostering collaboration between public research bodies and private innovators, the initiative aligns with France’s broader strategy to remain at the forefront of emerging technologies. The CEA’s involvement signals strong governmental support for home‑grown solutions, reducing reliance on foreign platforms.

Implications for the broader market

Improving Qaptiva could give French companies a competitive edge in fields such as materials physics, where quantum simulations promise breakthroughs. If successful, the software may also challenge the dominance of Nvidia’s CUDA‑Q in AI workloads, offering an alternative that leverages France’s own research and development capabilities.

Industry observers note that a robust domestic quantum‑software stack could attract further investment, create high‑skill jobs, and reinforce Europe’s position in the global technology race.

Looking ahead

The partnership marks a significant step toward integrating quantum and classical computing resources on a national scale. As Alice & Bob’s hardware comes online in 2027, the CEA plans to evaluate performance gains and explore additional applications across scientific research and industry.

For now, the collaboration underscores France’s commitment to nurturing home‑grown innovation, ensuring that the country remains a key player in the rapidly evolving quantum‑computing landscape.
