Fourth‑Generation Teacher Returns to Grimes School District

North Ridge Elementary in Grimes is welcoming a familiar face this fall: kindergarten teacher Michelle Mickle, a fourth‑generation graduate of the Dallas Center‑Grimes (DC‑G) school system. Mickle’s story highlights the deep roots many families have in the district, a tradition that strengthens community bonds and reinforces the value of local education.

Family legacy spans a hundred years

“I feel truly blessed to be back here,” Mickle said, reflecting on her personal connection to the schools that shaped her family. Her great‑grandfather, Hiram Rosenberg, graduated in 1924 from the original Grimes High School. Her grandfather, Ronald “Rosie” Rosenberg, earned his diploma in the class of 1950, and her father, Keith Rosenberg, walked the stage in 1971 after the consolidation of Dallas Center and Grimes schools.

Continuing the lineage, Mickle herself graduated from DC‑G in 2007 and now returns each day to guide the district’s youngest learners. “I’ve always felt at home here,” she added. “These people, the people that surround me, are my people.”

Alumni returning to serve

The district’s communication director, AJ Ellingsen, noted that six former students have rejoined the staff this year, representing roughly 11 percent of the district’s 450 employees. This influx of alumni teachers underscores a broader trend across Iowa’s 324 public school districts, where many staff members are second‑ or third‑generation graduates.

Beyond Mickle, the family tradition continues. Her husband is also a DC‑G graduate, and the couple looks forward to seeing their two children become first‑graders and, eventually, alumni of the same schools.

Why generational ties matter

When educators share a personal history with the schools they serve, they bring a unique perspective that benefits students and families alike. Long‑standing connections foster a sense of continuity, pride, and accountability, reinforcing the district’s mission to provide a stable, values‑centered learning environment.

Community leaders see these ties as a testament to the district’s enduring role in shaping future generations. By hiring former students, the district not only retains institutional knowledge but also strengthens the communal fabric that defines small‑town Iowa.

Looking ahead

As the new school year unfolds, the DC‑G district anticipates more alumni returning to the classroom, further cementing the legacy of service that began a century ago. For families like the Mickles, the school district remains more than an educational institution—it is a cornerstone of community identity and a place where traditions are passed down, generation after generation.
