Four Renoir paintings stolen from Cagnes-sur-Mer museum, two still missing

Police in the French Riviera launched a nationwide search after a daring early‑morning robbery at the Renoir Museum in Cagnes‑sur‑Mer. The thieves sliced through a fence, entered the museum through a ground‑floor window and, in less than three minutes, made off with four prized Renoir paintings.

What was taken and what was recovered

Mayor Bryan Masson said the four stolen works were valued at roughly 9 million euros (about $10.5 million). Two of the paintings – Renoir’s “Portrait of Madame Pichon” and “Coco Reading” – were later found discarded in the museum garden. The two still missing are “Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano” and “Young Woman at the Well.”

Historical significance of the missing works

Both missing pieces have fraught histories. “Young Woman at the Well” was looted by the Nazis during World War II, recovered in Bavaria in 1949 and returned to France. “Coco Reading” was given by a German officer to a soldier at the war’s end, passed to a priest, then to a Berlin museum before being repatriated to France in 1994.

Security concerns and response

The museum, housed in the former home of painter Pierre‑Auguste Renoir, is the town’s most visited attraction. According to the mayor, the thieves used an electric knife or saw to cut the fence and then cut the clips securing the frames. The alarm sounded at 5:48 a.m., and police arrived within five minutes, forcing the burglars to flee hastily and limiting the scale of the theft.

Mayor Masson called the incident a warning about the need for stronger protection of cultural sites. The Marseille prosecutor has opened an investigation into an organized‑crime gang, and the French national office for traffic in cultural goods is joining the probe.

Expert commentary on art theft

Art‑loss specialist James Ratcliffe said underfunding is the primary problem facing museums, especially smaller ones with limited budgets. He noted that the recent Louvre heist demonstrated to criminals that museums can be soft targets, prompting a shift in how thieves view cultural institutions.

Ratcliffe warned that while the stolen Renoirs are worth seven‑figure sums, finding a buyer will be extremely difficult. “Unless the thieves have a pre‑arranged plan, they cannot simply walk into an art dealer and sell such high‑profile works,” he explained.

Impact on the community

The theft has shocked residents of Cagnes‑sur‑Mer, a town nestled between Cannes and Nice. The museum, which holds twelve Renoir works in total, remains closed while investigators continue their search for the missing paintings and the perpetrators.

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact local police. The case underscores the broader challenge of protecting France’s rich cultural heritage against organized crime.
