Four passengers burned as smoke fills American Airlines flight landing in Dallas

Dallas, Texas – A routine American Airlines flight from Atlanta to Dallas‑Fort Worth encountered a dangerous situation on Thursday evening when smoke began to fill the cabin during its final approach. The aircraft’s pilot reported the emergency to air‑traffic control and requested medical assistance on the ground.

Cause of the smoke

Airline officials identified the source of the smoke as a passenger’s laptop that began emitting fumes while the plane was descending. The device appeared to overheat, producing enough smoke to trigger the aircraft’s ventilation system and alert the crew.

Injuries reported

The pilot informed the control tower that four to five passengers had sustained burn injuries as a result of the incident. Airport medical personnel were dispatched immediately upon the aircraft’s arrival. One passenger received treatment at the scene and was later released, while the remaining individuals were taken to local hospitals for further evaluation.

Response from American Airlines

American Airlines released a brief statement confirming that the smoke originated from a passenger’s electronic device and that the airline’s crew followed standard emergency procedures. The carrier emphasized its commitment to passenger safety and indicated that a full investigation would be conducted to determine why the laptop malfunctioned.

Impact on airport operations

Dallas‑Fort Worth International Airport experienced a short delay as emergency crews responded and the aircraft was cleared to taxi to the gate. No other flights were reported to be affected, and normal operations resumed within an hour of the incident.

What passengers should know

Travelers are reminded to ensure that electronic devices are fully charged and in good working order before boarding. In the event of smoke or fire on a plane, crew members are trained to deploy oxygen masks, initiate emergency ventilation, and coordinate with ground responders.

Next steps

Authorities from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will review the incident to assess whether any additional safety measures are needed. Passengers who experienced injuries are being monitored, and the airline is working with medical providers to ensure appropriate care.

The incident underscores the importance of vigilance when using personal electronics on flights, especially during critical phases of flight such as landing and takeoff.
