Fort Wayne’s YLNI Farmers Market Elects Five-Month-Old Golden Retriever as Mayor

FORT WAYNE, Indiana – The YLNI Farmers Market, a staple of downtown Fort Wayne’s Barr Street corridor, introduced a new “Mayor of the Market” this past Saturday. Pebbles, a five‑month‑old golden retriever, won the whimsical election and will serve a one‑year term representing the market’s vendors, shoppers and community partners.

How a Puppy Became Mayor

The light‑hearted campaign was organized by Pebbles’ owner and market vendor Samantha Andryk, who acted as the dog’s campaign manager. Pebbles ran on the slogan “No Sticks Gets Left Behind,” a playful nod to the market’s family‑friendly atmosphere and the importance of keeping the space clean for both people and pets.

After a brief ceremony at the market’s information tent, Pebbles was presented with a small ribbon‑tied collar and a ceremonial gavel. Spike, another market vendor’s dog, was named Deputy Mayor to assist Pebbles throughout the term.

Mayor’s Planned Activities

According to Andryk, Pebbles’ duties will include visiting local events, attending live‑music performances hosted at the market, and making regular trips to Tom’s Food Truck for a special “pup cup” treat. The market hopes the canine mayor will draw additional families and pet owners to the weekly vendor lineup, reinforcing the market’s reputation as a welcoming gathering place.

Market organizers also used the occasion to remind Fort Wayne residents that the YLNI Farmers Market is currently seeking votes for a national ranking. After being named Indiana’s top farmers market for four consecutive years, the market is now competing for the top spot in the United States. Voters can cast their ballots at the market’s information tent or online through the market’s website.

Community Response

Shoppers and vendors alike responded enthusiastically to the announcement. Many praised the market’s creative approach to community engagement, noting that the mayoral election adds a fun, family‑oriented element to the weekly event. Local families expressed excitement about the prospect of seeing Pebbles at upcoming concerts and festivals, while vendors anticipate increased foot traffic as the story spreads across social media.

“It’s a wonderful way to bring the community together,” said one regular vendor who asked to remain unnamed. “People love seeing a friendly face—especially a golden retriever—leading the market. It highlights the family‑friendly spirit we strive for every Saturday.”

Looking Ahead

Beyond the mayoral duties, the YLNI Farmers Market continues to focus on supporting local agriculture, artisanal food producers and small businesses. The market operates year‑round, offering fresh produce, handmade crafts and live entertainment that reflect Fort Wayne’s growing emphasis on local entrepreneurship and community connection.

As Pebbles begins her term, market officials hope the novelty will translate into lasting support for the vendors and reinforce the market’s role as a hub for families, pet owners and neighbors who value fresh, locally sourced goods.
