Fort Wayne, Ind. – The City Council gave committee approval to two neighborhood infrastructure projects that together total $2.56 million. Both initiatives are being led by the Public Works Division and will move forward once the full council votes at a future meeting.
Street repairs at New Kirkwood Park
The first project allocates $1.941 million to concrete street repairs at New Kirkwood Park. Work will include reconstructing concrete streets, installing underground drainage, repairing sidewalks and driveways, and upgrading ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The city expects the improvements to be completed by November 2027.
New sidewalk on Spring Street
The second project adds a sidewalk along Spring Street between Lindenwood Avenue and Saint Francis Drive (formerly Leesburg Road) near the University of Saint Francis. The sidewalk is budgeted at $619,400, with the university contributing $90,000 toward construction costs. Construction is slated to begin in November, weather permitting, and finish in April 2027.
Mayor Tucker’s broader infrastructure push
Mayor Sharon Tucker highlighted that the city is investing $37 million in neighborhood infrastructure improvements this year. The council’s recent approvals are part of that larger effort to modernize streets, improve drainage, and enhance pedestrian safety across Fort Wayne.
Next steps
Both projects still require final approval at a future council meeting. Once authorized, the Public Works Division will issue contracts and begin scheduling crews. Residents can expect updates on timelines and any temporary disruptions as construction progresses.
Community impact
These improvements aim to boost safety and accessibility for families, seniors, and all residents who use the park and nearby sidewalks. By addressing aging infrastructure and expanding pedestrian pathways, the city is reinforcing its commitment to a livable, family‑friendly community.
