Rapid City, SD – Over a lively three‑hour weekend, the Black Hills Humane Society turned the parking lot of Courtesy Subaru into a family‑friendly celebration of dogs. The Howl‑O‑Ween Dog Carnival and Adoption Fest gave local residents a chance to showcase their pets, enjoy carnival games, and meet dogs available for adoption.
Community Fun with a Purpose
Executive Director Tammy Barrows explained that the event’s donations directly support the shelter’s operating costs. “It costs a lot to feed these little beasties, so food, keeping the lights on, vet bills, and most of our money that we have to keep the shelter open is based on donations,” she said.
Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, including photo‑ops, a costume contest for pooches, and food and drink trucks serving the crowd. Raffles and giveaways added extra excitement, while local vendors provided additional treats.
All Dogs Adopted
Barrows announced that every dog brought to the carnival was adopted by the end of the day. “We only have one dog left, and I think he’s going to be adopted, so we’re 100% adopted for the animals at this event,” she said. The shelter also highlighted its new “Kitty City” space, which now offers a dedicated area for cat adoptions, effectively doubling the organization’s daily adoption opportunities.
Potential pet owners were able to interact with adoptable dogs in a relaxed setting, seeing how each animal might fit into a family’s home beyond the traditional kennel environment. This hands‑on approach helped match dogs with owners who were looking for specific temperaments and activity levels.
Supporting the Shelter’s Mission
The Howl‑O‑Ween celebration underscores the Black Hills Humane Society’s broader mission to provide care, shelter, and permanent homes for animals in need. By combining community entertainment with a clear adoption goal, the event demonstrated how local volunteers, businesses, and families can work together to support a vital nonprofit.
Barrows encouraged residents to continue supporting the shelter throughout the year, whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word about adoptable pets. “Our community’s generosity keeps the lights on and the doors open for animals who need a second chance,” she added.
Looking Ahead
Following the success of the Howl‑O‑Ween fest, the Black Hills Humane Society plans to host additional events that blend fun with fundraising, aiming to sustain its operations and expand adoption services. Residents are invited to stay tuned for upcoming activities that celebrate both pets and the community spirit of Rapid City.
