Fort McHenry: Where the Star-Spangled Banner Still Flies Proud

There are places you visit, and then there are places that genuinely move you. Fort McHenry, tucked along the Locust Point peninsula in South Baltimore, belongs firmly in that second category. Standing on those star-shaped ramparts with the Patapsco River stretching out before you and an enormous American flag snapping overhead in the Chesapeake breeze, it is almost impossible not to feel something.

This is, after all, the ground where Francis Scott Key found his inspiration. On the morning of September 14, 1814, after watching the British bombardment rage through the night, Key looked up and saw that the fort’s garrison flag was still flying. The poem he scribbled on the back of a letter became the national anthem. You already know the words. Coming here makes you understand them.

Getting to Fort McHenry is easy and honestly part of the fun. You can drive and park for free, but I strongly recommend taking the water taxi from the Inner Harbor. The short cruise gives you a sailor’s-eye view of the fort’s approach — the same angle the British fleet had in 1814 — and that perspective alone is worth the few dollars for the fare. The ride takes about fifteen minutes and drops you right at the fort’s dock.

Once you arrive, start at the Visitor Center. The orientation film, shown in a small theater, is genuinely well-produced and sets the historical stage without being dry or lecture-y. Rangers are stationed throughout the grounds and are the kind of enthusiastic historians who can answer almost anything you throw at them. Ask about the fort’s role in the Civil War, when it served as a Union prison — that chapter of its history surprises most visitors.

Then head outside and walk the full perimeter of the star-shaped fortification. The earthwork walls, the original powder magazine, and the restored barracks give you a tangible sense of what the soldiers endured during that 25-hour bombardment. The views across the harbor are spectacular at any hour, but come in the late afternoon when the light turns golden and the flag casts long shadows across the grounds. Photographers, bring your wide-angle lens.

Admission is just $15 for adults and free for children 15 and under, which makes this one of the best-value experiences in the entire city. The grounds are open daily, and the park hosts living history demonstrations on many weekends throughout the spring and summer, including musket drills and cannon firings that genuinely thrill visitors of every age.

Fort McHenry is not a stuffy monument frozen behind velvet ropes. It is an active, breathing national park that sits right in the middle of a living city. Baltimore grew up around this fort, and in many ways the city’s identity — gritty, resilient, proudly itself — echoes the spirit of the defenders who held it. Come for the history, stay for the view, and leave with a much better reason to sing that anthem.
