A fatal shooting in Fort Dodge has been ruled self-defense, according to the Fort Dodge Police Department and the Webster County Attorney’s Office. The shooting occurred on July 24 and left 45-year-old Thomas Henry Ahrens dead.
Investigators identified 31-year-old Josiah Byram as the person who fired the shot. Byram remained at the scene and was interviewed by detectives. Evidence showed Ahrens was actively attacking Byram, who retreated into his own home during the confrontation. Byram then fired a single shot that struck Ahrens.
After the shooting, Byram called 911 to report what had happened. The Webster County Attorney’s Office reviewed the results of the investigation and determined Byram’s actions were justified under Iowa’s self-defense laws.
