Fort Bend County commissioners have renamed the county jail to the Sheriff Milton T. Wright Jr. Detention Center, in honor of the late sheriff who served the county from 1996 to 2012.
Wright’s Legacy
Sheriff Wright was first elected in 1996 and served four terms. During his tenure, he modernized the sheriff’s office with advanced technology, specialized divisions, and inmate support programs. Before serving as sheriff, Wright worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety and served in the presidential motorcade during the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy.
Interim Fort Bend County Judge Daniel Wong said the renaming will serve as a reminder that public service is not measured by recognition but instead by the willingness to answer the call to serve others. Sheriff Eric Fagan stated that the jail does not only hold prisoners but also helps to change their lives, and that Sheriff Wright brought many programs to the jail to help individuals become productive members of the community.
