Former Utah Utes players allege injuries were mishandled under Coach Whittingham

Six alumni of the University of Utah football program have come forward with concerns that injuries they sustained between 2020 and 2024 were not properly diagnosed or treated under former head coach Kyle Whittingham. The former players, who won two Pac-12 championships and appeared in back‑to‑back Rose Bowls, say they felt pressure from coaches to return to the field before they were medically cleared.

Players describe delayed care and rushed returns

Defensive lineman Van Fillinger fractured his right tibia in 2022 but says the team did not order an X‑ray immediately. Instead, he was placed in a walking boot despite feeling a “snap” in his ankle and severe pain. An X‑ray taken later confirmed the break and ended his season. Fillinger told the Salt Lake Tribune, “It felt like they were handling it pretty lackadaisically. I should have gotten an X‑ray that night because of the pain that I was in.”

After three weeks on the sidelines, Fillinger says position coach Lewis Powell warned him that Whittingham would not allow a redshirt season, adding, “(Powell) said that I’ll be kicked off the team if I don’t play.”

Wide receiver Mycah Pittman recounted a similar experience after injuring his ankle in fall camp 2024. An initial X‑ray diagnosed a sprain, but an MRI a month later revealed a partially torn Achilles tendon.

Running back Jaylon Glover said the program’s culture pushed athletes to return quickly, noting, “I feel like a lot of the times the training staff would be on one page, but the coaching staff was on another because it was all about, ‘We need him back.’”

Unrealistic rehab expectations

Tight end Miki Suguturaga alleged that he was encouraged to practice on an injured ankle and that the staff set “rehab deadlines” that were unrealistic. “Whatever deadline they put on you was what it was supposed to be. If you’re not feeling right, they still just kind of pushed you to get back as soon as possible,” he said.

Defensive lineman Tevita Fotu, who tore his left ACL as a redshirt freshman, claimed an assistant told him the “head man” wanted him to “push through.” Fotu added, “They’d threaten to put someone else in front of me… they’d even threaten to take away my scholarship. It was kind of heartbreaking. I thought these guys would care about me.”

University response

The University of Utah Department of Athletics and University of Utah Health issued a joint statement emphasizing that return‑to‑play decisions are a collaborative process involving doctors, trainers, and athletes. “The University of Utah Department of Athletics follows all University and national guidelines to ensure student success and safety,” the statement read. “We routinely evaluate our processes and welcome the opportunity to make adjustments if we determine our policies are not meeting expectations.”

A spokesperson for Michigan, where Whittingham took over as head coach this season, clarified that medical decisions at Utah were made by the medical team, not the coach. “Coach Whittingham or his coaching staff did not make medical decisions (at Utah). He followed the lead of the medical team,” the spokesperson said.

Implications for player safety

The allegations raise questions about how collegiate athletic programs balance competitive pressure with the health and well‑being of student‑athletes. While the university stresses adherence to national guidelines, the former players’ accounts suggest a culture that prioritized immediate on‑field contributions over thorough medical evaluation and recovery.

Parents, alumni, and fans of the Utes will likely watch closely as the university reviews its policies and as Coach Whittingham begins his tenure at Michigan. The situation underscores the ongoing conversation about athlete safety, parental rights, and institutional responsibility in college sports.
