Former Team USA triathlete Spencer Korwin dies in drowning off Shelter Island

Long Island authorities confirmed that Spencer Korwin, a 38‑year‑old former Team USA triathlete and father of two, died in an apparent accidental drowning on Shelter Island. The tragedy unfolded on September 2 when Korwin failed to return from a swim near the Pridwin Hotel, prompting an extensive search that lasted several hours.

Search and recovery

Local police and Suffolk County marine units launched a coordinated effort after Korwin was reported missing. Divers scoured the waters around the hotel’s dock, eventually locating his body beneath the structure. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet issued a formal cause of death, but officials indicated that an accidental drowning is the most likely explanation.

Korwin’s athletic legacy

Korwin represented the United States at the 2012 Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, and was known locally for his dedication to swimming and endurance sports. Friends and fellow athletes remembered him as a disciplined competitor who inspired younger triathletes in the region.

Community response

Residents expressed shock and sorrow over the loss. Laurie Eckardt, a lifelong Shelter Island resident, told the Shelter Island Reporter that many people are unfamiliar with the area’s currents and tides, underscoring the need for caution when swimming in unfamiliar waters.

The incident marks the second fatal drowning on Shelter Island this summer, following the death of 18‑year‑old Timothy Magambo, who drowned while swimming with friends earlier in the season.

Family and support

Korwin is survived by his wife and two young daughters, ages one and four. A GoFundMe page set up by family members seeks contributions to support the children’s future education and to help the family cope with their loss. The page describes Korwin as a “beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” emphasizing the deep impact he had on those who knew him.

Safety reminder

Local officials continue to advise swimmers and boaters to stay aware of rip currents, changing tides, and weather conditions, especially in areas where water patterns are less familiar. The Suffolk County Police Department encourages anyone planning a swim to check local advisories and to never swim alone.

While the community mourns the loss of a respected athlete and family man, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that can accompany even routine recreational activities on New York’s coastal waters.
