Former President Obama mourns loss of family dog Sunny

Washington — Former President Barack Obama shared a heartfelt tribute on social media Wednesday after the family’s beloved Portuguese water dog, Sunny, died on Tuesday at the age of 13. The Obamas first welcomed Sunny into the White House in 2013, during the early months of their second term.

Sunny’s place in the Obama family

“We got Sunny at the start of our second term in the White House, and all of us — including our first dog, Bo — immediately fell in love,” Obama wrote. He remembered Sunny as an athletic, energetic companion who was fiercely protective of Bo, the family’s earlier Labrador retriever.

Despite her breed’s reputation for loving water, Sunny reportedly disliked getting wet, a quirk that often amused the family. “We will miss her terribly, and imagine she’s with her big brother now, making sure he’s okay,” Obama added, referencing Bo, who passed away in 2021.

A tradition of presidential pets

The Obamas join a long line of presidents who have kept dogs as members of the First Family. While President Donald Trump does not keep a pet at the White House, other former leaders have been noted for their canine companions: George H.W. Bush’s English springer spaniel Millie authored a bestseller, Bill Clinton’s chocolate Labrador Buddy was a constant presence during the 1990s, and George W. Bush’s Scottish terrier Barney starred in popular “Barneycam” videos. Even earlier, President Harry S. Truman famously advised, “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.”

Why pets matter to families and the nation

Presidential pets often become symbols of stability and relatability for the American public. They provide a glimpse into the private lives of leaders, reminding citizens that even those in the highest office share everyday joys and sorrows. The Obamas’ openness about Sunny’s passing reflects a broader cultural appreciation for family pets as companions that shape household life.

Obama’s tribute resonated with many who have followed the Obamas’ public service and personal milestones. Social‑media users expressed condolences, sharing memories of Sunny’s playful demeanor and the comfort she brought to the family during demanding years in the nation’s capital.

Looking forward

While the loss of a cherished pet is deeply personal, the public remembrance underscores the role of family values and faith in navigating grief. The Obama family’s reflection on Sunny’s life serves as a reminder of the enduring bond between humans and their animal companions, a bond that transcends politics and unites people across the country.
