Former Kansas Senator Nancy Kassebaum Baker, pioneering Republican, dies at 94

Former U.S. Senator Nancy Kassebaum Baker passed away on Friday at the age of 94, according to her son Bill Kassebaum. She died of natural causes in Kansas, the state she loved and represented for 18 years.

Trailblazing career

Kassebaum Baker made history in 1978 when she became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate on her own merits, not as a widow succeeding a husband. Serving three terms, she earned a reputation as an independent‑minded Republican willing to stand up for her convictions, even when they diverged from party leadership.

Her modest demeanor helped her win support across the political spectrum. In 1996, she was one of only eight women serving in the Senate and the sole chair of a Senate committee, the Labor and Human Resources panel.

Key legislative work

Among her notable achievements was co‑authoring the 1996 health‑insurance law that bears her name alongside liberal Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy. She also supported a ban on semi‑automatic rifles championed by President Bill Clinton, a stance that drew intense criticism from some conservative activists.

Family and public service

Born July 29, 1932, she was the daughter of former Kansas Governor Alf Landon, the 1936 Republican presidential nominee. After earning a political‑science degree from the University of Kansas and a master’s in diplomatic history from the University of Michigan, she worked as a radio‑station executive, served on the staff of Kansas Senator James Pearson, and sat on the school board in Maize, a Wichita suburb.

She married former Senator Howard Baker in 1996; he died in 2014. The couple’s marriage marked the first time a man and a woman who both served in the Senate wed.

Later years and legacy

Even after leaving the Senate in early 1997, Kassebaum Baker remained active in public service, joining bipartisan commissions on campaign‑finance reform and serving on a British commission in Africa. She later broke with the increasingly conservative Republican Party, endorsing Democratic candidates for Kansas governor and U.S. Senate, including Governor Laura Kelly.

In 2021, she called for the impeachment of former President Donald Trump after the Capitol breach, stating, “This just has gone too far.”

Her son recalled her love for Kansas and her desire to return to a ranch in the Flint Hills to care for her grandchildren. She declined a proposal to name a Topeka highway after her, saying, “Oh, goodness. Absolutely not — no.”

Kassebaum Baker’s career exemplified a blend of moderate Republican values, dedication to public service, and a willingness to cross party lines when she believed it was right.
