Former Illinois deputy convicted in Sonya Massey shooting dies while incarcerated

Sean Grayson, a 32‑year‑old former Illinois sheriff’s deputy, died on Sunday while serving a 20‑year prison term for the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey. Grayson’s attorney, Daniel Fultz, confirmed the death but declined to provide further details.

Background of the case

In July 2024, Massey, a 36‑year‑old Black woman, called 911 to report a possible prowler outside her Springfield‑area home. Grayson and another Sangamon County deputy responded. Body‑camera footage shows Massey crouched in her kitchen, apologizing, and saying, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus,” before Grayson threatened to shoot, drew his handgun, and ordered her to drop a pot of hot water she was holding.

Massey ducked behind a counter and Grayson fired three rounds, striking her in the face. The second deputy, Dawson Farley, later testified that he did not view Massey as a threat and only drew his weapon after Grayson did.

Grayson was fired from the sheriff’s office, charged with first‑degree murder, and ultimately convicted of second‑degree murder in October 2025 after arguing he feared Massey would throw the hot water at him. He received the maximum sentence of 20 years in January 2026.

Health issues and request for release

Prior to the shooting, Grayson had been diagnosed with colon cancer that later spread to his liver and lungs. In May 2026, he applied for medical release under an Illinois statute that allows terminally ill prisoners to be considered for compassionate release. The Illinois Prisoner Review Board denied the request last month.

Legislative and federal response

Massey’s death sparked national protests and prompted Illinois lawmakers to pass the Sonya Massey Act, which tightens background‑check requirements for law‑enforcement hiring. The U.S. Justice Department also opened a civil‑rights investigation, reaching an agreement with Sangamon County and related agencies to improve training for interactions with individuals experiencing behavioral‑health crises and to develop a mobile crisis response program.

Impact on the community

The case remains a focal point for discussions about police use of force, accountability, and the need for thorough vetting of law‑enforcement candidates. Local faith leaders and families have called for continued reforms to protect citizens while respecting the constitutional rights of officers.
