Ford Motor has announced its upcoming midsize electric pickup truck, named Fathom, which will be priced starting at about $28,000. This move is part of the company’s effort to offer an affordable model in the electric vehicle market.
Ford’s EV Strategy
Ford has approached the development and manufacturing of the Fathom from the ground up, assembling a specialized team in California to compete with rivals like Tesla and China’s BYD. The company has established a new assembly-tree manufacturing process at its Louisville Assembly Plant, which is designed to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
The Fathom is part of a limited group of vehicles available for under $30,000. According to data from car-shopping website Edmunds, there are currently 36 models available in the US with a starting price under $30,000.
Pre-orders for the Fathom will open in early 2027, with customer deliveries beginning in autumn 2027. The sub-$30,000 pickup truck is expected to be the first of a family of models based on Ford’s new EV platform.
