EL PASO, Texas – Over 4,100 lab-confirmed domestic cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported nationwide since May 1, sparking concerns about food safety. Clinical psychologist Susan Albers notes that while taking precautions like washing food and staying up to date on recall information is healthy, excessive anxiety can be detrimental.
Food Caution vs. Food Phobia
Albers emphasizes the difference between food caution and food phobia, stating that the latter can take control of one’s life, leading to avoidance of restaurants, food preparation, and grocery shopping. She advises focusing on facts rather than fear and avoiding doomscrolling.
According to Albers, people with health anxiety, OCD, or disordered eating may be more vulnerable to food phobias during outbreaks. She recommends checking in with a therapist if one’s behavior is changing and affecting their health, emotions, or relationships.
