Florida, Tennessee Lawmakers Propose Renaming Street Outside Chinese Embassy

In a move to highlight historical events and human rights issues, U.S. Senator Rick Scott of Florida and Representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee have introduced the ‘Tiananmen Square Memorial Act of 2026.’ This proposed legislation seeks to rename the street in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., to ‘Tiananmen Square Memorial Boulevard.’

Historical Significance

The proposed name change marks the 37th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing, where the Chinese government conducted a military crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators. The bill would change the embassy’s address from 3505 International Place NW to ‘1 Tiananmen Square Memorial Boulevard,’ serving as a constant reminder of the events of 1989.

Senator Rick Scott emphasized the importance of remembering the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre, stating, ‘The regime has shown no remorse for this horrific event, has never taken accountability, and continues to commit severe human rights violations to this day.’ Representative Andy Ogles echoed these sentiments, highlighting the symbolic weight of the proposed street name change as a stance against the Chinese Communist Party’s actions.

Implementation Details

The bill also instructs the Administrator of General Services to install street signs with the new name, designed to match the style of Washington, D.C.’s Metro station signs. These signs would be placed on federal property and at key intersections around the embassy, including International Drive Northwest and Van Ness Street Northwest.

Both lawmakers view this legislative effort as a way to ensure that the Chinese government is reminded of its past actions every time it interacts with its U.S. embassy. The initiative underscores America’s commitment to human rights and the memory of those who lost their lives in the pursuit of democracy.
