Florida GOP Rep Salazar faces Freedom Caucus backlash over anti‑immigration ad

In a campaign ad released Thursday outside the White House, Rep. María Elvira Salazar, R‑Florida, questioned President Trump’s approach to immigration enforcement, suggesting that some of his policies have gone too far. Salazar, whose South Florida district voted heavily for Trump in 2024, warned that the administration’s hard‑line stance could alienate Hispanic voters who helped secure the Republican victory.

Freedom Caucus defends Trump’s immigration line

House Freedom Caucus leaders quickly issued a statement defending the President’s immigration record. “President Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts should be applauded and continue as is,” the statement read. The caucus added that “any alien who enters this country illegally has committed a crime. The United States should deport every illegal alien. This is America, and this government should be ensuring the dignity of American citizens. Illegal aliens can enjoy dignity in their home country or come to this country legally.”

The leaders continued, “Granting illegal aliens any legal status to remain in the United States is amnesty. We reject amnesty. The House Freedom Caucus stands with President Trump: secure the border, enforce the law, and lock these policies into statute, so no future administration can erase them with a pen.”

DHS backs Trump’s mass‑deportation pledge

The Department of Homeland Security also weighed in, echoing the President’s promise of a historic mass‑deportation campaign. A DHS spokesperson said, “DHS is focused on delivering the most historic mass deportation campaign in American history—exactly as President Trump promised.” The spokesperson emphasized that ICE agents are “enforcing the laws passed by Congress” and that “the only thing America should be giving illegal immigrants is a one‑way ticket home, or a generous $3,000 check for them to self‑deport immediately.”

Salazar’s prior immigration work and political calculus

Salazar’s criticism is not her first foray into immigration reform. She previously faced criticism from the Freedom Caucus for bipartisan legislation aimed at reforming the asylum process and creating a legal pathway for illegal immigrants who have not committed crimes. While her district is rated R+6 by the Cook Political Report, Democrats are already eyeing the seat as a potential pickup in future elections.

In the ad, Salazar told President Trump, “Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far. Be careful what your advisors are telling you about immigration policy. The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today.” She added, “You can be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery and Reagan was for communism. I’m not talking about giving them amnesty. I’m talking about giving them a dignified life in this promised land. And only you can do that.”

Party tension reflects broader debate

The clash underscores a growing debate within the Republican Party over how to balance strict border enforcement with outreach to Hispanic voters. While the Trump administration continues to push for aggressive deportations, some GOP lawmakers argue that a more nuanced approach could preserve the party’s gains among Latino communities.

For now, the Freedom Caucus and DHS have placed Salazar’s remarks squarely in the camp of “backlash from opponents,” positioning the President’s immigration agenda as a cornerstone of the party’s platform heading into the 2026 midterms.
