A Cyclospora outbreak has hit Florida, with 60 confirmed cases reported across the state. According to Dr. Steven Goldberg, chief medical officer for HealthTrackRx, Cyclospora is a foodborne parasite that causes a diarrheal illness.
What’s Causing the Outbreak?
Researchers believe that contaminated produce, particularly lettuce and other salad greens, may be contributing to the current outbreak. Florida farmers are encouraging people to eat locally grown produce to avoid national outbreaks.
To prevent contamination, farmers are taking additional precautions, such as using treated water rather than canal water to irrigate their crops. A county-by-county breakdown of the cases is available, with the highest number of cases reported in Lee County.
