Florida Alligator Attacks Raise Safety Concerns

Recent alligator attacks across Florida, including a deadly encounter in Orlando, are putting a spotlight on the dangers of living alongside these powerful reptiles.

What Happens After an Alligator Attack?

When an alligator is involved in an attack, a licensed trapper is typically called in to remove it. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the alligator becomes the property of the trapper, and most are processed for their hide and meat, while others are sold alive to a gator farm, animal exhibit, or zoo.

Estero resident Richard Wilbanks, who saved his puppy from an alligator in 2020, said, “I only watched that video one time.” Wilbanks has since become an advocate for wildlife safety and education.

Preventing Alligator Attacks

Experts point to one major mistake: feeding alligators. Feeding alligators can change their behavior, making them more aggressive and less fearful of humans.

Dr. Edwin Everham with Florida Gulf Coast University said, “A lot of gator attacks are tied to behaviors that we can prevent.” Everham also noted that Florida’s growth is bringing people closer to alligator habitat, increasing the risk of encounters.

Wilbanks has written a children’s book about his experience to teach kids about wildlife safety. He said, “We probably need more education in how to cope with wildlife.” Wilbanks has also taken steps to educate himself and his community about alligator safety.
