Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has launched a civil rights investigation into Major League Baseball (MLB) over its warning to three San Francisco Giants players about inscribing a Bible verse on their Pride Night caps. The investigation will examine whether MLB is violating the civil rights of players based on their religious beliefs.
Investigation Details
The Florida subpoena, issued under the Florida Civil Rights Act, demands that MLB deliver documents to the AG’s office by July 23, 2026. The subpoena is in response to MLB’s warning to the players, which Uthmeier believes may be a violation of Florida civil rights law and the League’s own policies.
Uthmeier noted that MLB has allowed players to express other beliefs and ideologies on their uniforms, such as Black Lives Matter patches, but seems to be targeting players who express religious views. The AG is seeking to determine whether MLB is selectively enforcing its rules to benefit certain secular beliefs over others.
Reaction from Other States
Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway has also written to MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred, asking him to confirm that no player who chooses not to wear Pride Month paraphernalia or include Bible verses on Pride Month hats will be disciplined. If Manfred fails to respond or confirm, Hanaway may also launch an investigation into MLB.
