Florida Adds In-App Harvest Reporting for Alligator Hunters

Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has expanded the official Fish | Hunt FL mobile application to let participants in the Statewide Alligator Hunt and Super Hunt record their harvests directly from a smartphone. The new feature went live on August 15, giving hunters a faster, more convenient way to meet the state’s reporting requirements.

How the digital reporting works

To file a report, hunters log into their existing Fish | Hunt FL account, select the “hunting” tab, and tap the “Alligator Harvest Reports” button. The app then prompts users to enter the required details, which include the permit holder’s legal name, CITES tag number, harvest date, county and water body where the alligator was taken, total length of the animal in feet and inches, and the date and time of any transfer.

Once the information is submitted, the system automatically records the harvest and updates the hunter’s permit status. The digital log satisfies the state’s rule that every alligator must be reported within 24 hours or before the carcass is transferred to another person or processor.

Options for remote areas

Recognizing that many hunters operate in remote wetlands with limited cellular service, the commission retained a temporary paper reporting option. If a hunter cannot access the app before moving the carcass, they may complete a paper “temporary harvest transfer log” with the same required details. The paper log must be entered into the app within the 24‑hour window once service becomes available.

Why the change matters

The addition of in‑app reporting aligns Florida’s wildlife management practices with modern technology, reducing paperwork for hunters and improving the accuracy and timeliness of data collected by the state. Accurate harvest data helps wildlife biologists monitor alligator populations, set sustainable harvest limits, and ensure compliance with federal CITES regulations.

State officials also noted that the streamlined process could free up staff time previously spent processing paper reports, allowing more resources to be directed toward habitat conservation and public education about safe hunting practices.

What hunters should remember

Even with the new digital option, the fundamental reporting obligations remain unchanged. Hunters must still:

  • Report each alligator within 24 hours of the kill or before any transfer.
  • Provide complete information, including permittee name, tag number, location, length, and transfer details.
  • Use the temporary paper log only when cellular service is unavailable, and submit the information to the app as soon as possible.

The Fish | Hunt FL app is available for both iOS and Android devices and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. For additional assistance, hunters can contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s customer service line or visit a local commission office.

This update reflects Florida’s ongoing commitment to modernizing wildlife management while preserving the traditions of alligator hunting that many families have practiced for generations.
