In Montgomery, Ohio, the Gate of Heaven Cemetery stands as a solemn tribute to the brave men and women who have served our nation. As Memorial Day approaches, volunteers have placed thousands of American flags at the graves of more than 7,700 veterans, each flag a symbol of gratitude and remembrance.
Community Honors Sacrifice
The Valor Group, a dedicated team of volunteers, spent countless hours ensuring that each veteran’s grave was marked with a flag. This heartfelt gesture honors the service members who have participated in every American conflict since World War I. The display serves as a poignant reminder of the true cost of the freedoms we enjoy today.
Deacon Tim Schutte of Gate of Heaven Cemetery emphasized the importance of remembering and respecting those who have gone before us. He remarked, “We ought to remember; we ought to respect and celebrate our veterans, especially those who have gone before us. So that freedom of doing what we ought to do, it didn’t come free. It came from the hearts of people doing what they ought to do for the sake of others.”
Memorial Day Ceremonies
The cemetery will host an outdoor wreath-laying ceremony and Mass, drawing hundreds of families and community members. The event, beginning at 10:30 a.m., will feature U.S. Army veteran Alison Estes, who will offer words of reflection and honor for the deceased service members. The Archbishop of the Diocese of Cincinnati, Robert Case, will preside over the Mass, bringing the community together in faith and remembrance.
This local tribute in Montgomery is part of a broader series of Memorial Day observances across Greater Cincinnati, each aiming to honor the sacrifices made by veterans and to remind us all of the enduring spirit of service and sacrifice that defines our nation.
