Five Injured in Stabbing at New York’s Penn Station; Suspect in Custody

In a concerning incident at New York’s Penn Station, five people were stabbed on Sunday evening. The suspect, who may be unhoused, is now in custody, according to law enforcement officials. The New York City Fire Department received reports of the stabbings around 7 p.m. at the entrance on West 33rd Street and 7th Avenue.

Among the injured, one person sustained serious injuries, while the others suffered moderate to minor injuries. All victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital, and fortunately, none of the injuries are life-threatening, as confirmed by law enforcement.

The incident occurred just before President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA finals on Monday. Authorities have planned enhanced security measures for the event, including extra deployments, increased camera monitoring, intelligence sharing, and even drone deployments, given the elevated threat environment.

Response and Investigation

The Amtrak Police responded promptly to the reported stabbings, and an investigation is currently underway. Amtrak’s communications director confirmed that the suspect has been apprehended, and there is no impact on Amtrak services.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his concern for the victims and gratitude towards the first responders. “My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence. I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery,” Mamdani stated. He also commended the Amtrak Police Department and first responders for their swift action in apprehending the suspect and providing emergency care.

Penn Station, located directly below Madison Square Garden, serves as a major hub for city subway trains and passenger rail services to New Jersey and Long Island. The city’s Amtrak station is also situated there, highlighting the importance of maintaining security in such a critical transit point.

The New York Knicks are set to host the San Antonio Spurs for Monday’s game, marking the first time the NBA finals will be held at Madison Square Garden since 1999. The increased security measures are part of a proactive approach to ensure the safety of attendees and participants during this significant event.
