First responders gather in Oklahoma City for Swiftwater Rescue training at RiverSport

Oklahoma City is hosting the fourth annual Swiftwater Conference and Championship Games at RiverSport, drawing first‑responders from across the United States and as far away as Australia. Over the next several days participants will engage in hands‑on drills, classroom sessions and a final competition that tests their ability to conduct water rescues under pressure.

Training focus and local relevance

Greg Merrell, lead water instructor for Oklahoma State University Fire Service Training, emphasized the practical need for the event. “Of all the technical rescues we face, water rescue is the most common,” Merrell said. “We do have major flooding in OKC. A lot of our rains are going to lead to flooding incidents.” The training therefore directly supports the city’s preparedness for the flash‑flood events that have become more frequent in recent years.

International participation

Among the attendees is Daniel Vin, a firefighter from Sydney, Australia. Vin noted that his home country has experienced regular flooding over the past five years. “It’s a pretty cool experience,” he said, adding that he practiced a boat‑motor recovery technique that he plans to bring back to Australia.

Competition format

After several days of pre‑conference instruction, the participants will compete on Friday in a series of timed scenarios that simulate real‑world water emergencies. Merrell described the atmosphere as both supportive and competitive. “People cheer for one another, and it’s very competitive. You want to do better than the person before you,” he said.

Beyond water rescue

The training schedule also includes animal‑rescue drills slated for the following Tuesday, expanding the skill set of responders to cover a broader range of emergency situations.

Community impact

While the event draws a global audience, its immediate benefit is local. By sharpening the capabilities of Oklahoma City’s fire and rescue teams, the conference helps protect families and neighborhoods from the dangers of swift‑moving water. The collaboration with Oklahoma State University also reinforces the city’s ties to regional educational institutions that support public‑safety training.

Organizers hope that the knowledge exchanged this week will ripple outward, improving water‑rescue readiness in other jurisdictions that face similar flood risks.
