Firewheel Golf Park’s Forest Course Earns Its Reputation

Garland has more than 100 miles of trails mapped across its parks system, but most residents couldn’t name half of them. The Midtown Greenway Trail is one that deserves more attention — a paved, multi-use corridor that cuts through the older, quieter residential neighborhoods north of downtown, connecting Audubon Park to a handful of pocket parks along its roughly four-mile stretch.

You start near the Audubon Park entrance off Glenbrook Drive, where the parking is easy and free, and you follow a wide concrete path that threads between backyards, crosses a few low bridges over Duck Creek tributaries, and opens occasionally onto grassy clearings where people walk dogs, push strollers, or just sit on a bench doing nothing in particular. The trees here are the real draw — older post oaks and cedars that have had decades to grow tall and wide. On a weekday morning in spring or fall, the shade is thick enough that you almost forget you’re inside a city of quarter-million people.

The trail surface is well-maintained by Garland standards, mostly smooth with only a few rough patches near the creek crossings where tree roots have nudged the concrete up. It’s flat enough for a casual bike ride or a brisk walk, with gentle grades in a couple of spots near the creek that give your legs just enough work to justify the trip. You won’t mistake it for a wilderness experience — there are fences, power lines, and the occasional smell of a neighbor’s grill — but that’s not what it’s trying to be.

What makes this particular stretch worth seeking out is the way it moves through the older parts of Garland that most newcomers never see: the 1960s brick ranch houses, the churches that have been on the same corner for fifty years, the community garden someone planted along the fence line with hand-painted signs identifying the tomato varieties. It feels like the kind of place locals actually use rather than one maintained for photo opportunities.

Spring is the best season, full stop. The redbuds along the creek sections bloom purple-pink in March, and by April the whole corridor has a green density that softens every edge. Summer is manageable if you go before nine in the morning, but by midday the lack of air conditioning becomes the whole conversation. In cooler months, the trail gets weekend foot traffic — families, retired couples, the occasional runner with headphones — but it never feels crowded.

There’s no fee, no permit, no sign-in. Parking is informal at either end. The nearest restroom is back at the Audubon Park pavilion, so plan accordingly. A few trail connections branch off toward neighborhood streets, which makes it easy to extend your loop if you want an extra mile or two. Bring water — there are no fountains along the route itself.

It won’t appear on any list of the most dramatic trails in North Texas. But that’s precisely the point. Some places earn their value by being genuinely usable, genuinely local, and genuinely calm. This one does all three.
