FireFree Events in Central Oregon Promote Wildfire Preparedness

As fire season approaches in Central Oregon, Deschutes County is taking proactive steps to help residents protect their homes from potential wildfires. The county is organizing FireFree events, offering free yard debris collection in several communities, including La Pine, Redmond, and Sisters, starting Friday, June 5.

Community Efforts to Reduce Wildfire Risks

The FireFree initiative aims to encourage homeowners to clear flammable materials such as pine needles, branches, brush, weeds, and grass clippings from their properties. By creating defensible space around homes, residents can significantly reduce the risk of wildfire damage.

Earlier this month, similar free debris collection days were held in Bend and Sunriver, as well as in Crook and Jefferson counties. For those who missed these events, the upcoming drop-offs in La Pine, Redmond, and Sisters will run through June 13.

Importance of Early Preparation

With conditions becoming warmer and drier, early preparation is crucial for wildfire prevention. KTVZ’s Claire Elmer is covering the story, providing insights into what homeowners should be doing now to safeguard their properties. Her full report will air Sunday on KTVZ News at 6:00 p.m.

These community-driven efforts underscore the importance of local initiatives in promoting safety and preparedness. By participating in these events, residents are not only protecting their own homes but also contributing to the overall safety of their neighborhoods.
